AAC (that stands for alternative & augmentative communication for yall n00bs) symbol libraries kind of suck ass. I'm trying to fix that by drawing dogs. And other shit.
No but seriously. In my time as a high tech AAC user I have been extremely frustrated with the lack of clarity and inclusivity in AAC symbol libraries. Why are there more symbols for words about Christianity but not for Islam? Why can't I find words about trans bodies? Why are the skin tones light, medium or brown? Why are all of the symbols for genitals just an arrow pointing to a stick figure's crotch? Why is the symbol for schizophrenia a stereotypically "crazy" person? And finally, why is it the assumption that I have no agency over the words I want to use? Fuck that. If I can't talk with my mouth, that doesn't strip me of my ability to swear, consent to sex and other things, or, idk, do a flip? Is this coherent? I'm not super great at motivational speeches.
